A Sip of Assam, A Glimpse of Big Ben

Review & Photography by Zakiyya Rosebelle

A cute, red Routemaster bus pulls up and immediately fills my day with color, charm, and cheer. The excitement grows as the passengers begin to board the vintage London bus to take part in the BB Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus Tour. A dainty staircase spirals upward to the top deck, and amused, my fellow afternoon tea critic and I walk over to table 10 which gives us a perfect view from the top front windows.

It takes everyone a few minutes to be seated, and for me these moments are spent observing the table-setting to see how they have managed to arrange such a lovely sight-seeing affair. I am intrigued by the porcelain plates secured onto the table, and the adorable BB mugs from which I eventually sip my tea. Their mug perfectly ensures that we sip our tea securely and also in style.

A classic arrangement of sandwiches, savories, and sweets adorn an elegant tier server. It takes me a little while to begin eating, as I cannot help but take in the charm of this experience.

The BB Routemaster takes off slowly, and our tea-lightful adventure soon begins. I indulge in the petite sandwiches and savory treats, all of which are very much delicious.

Our host appears energetic and ecstatic as she introduces herself and says a few words about our tour. She seems to be just as elated as we are, and this adds to the positive vibe on the bus. We are given a few minutes to decide on our tea of choice, and I choose Assam tea, of course.

Before long, a scrumptious scone is served with clotted cream and my personal favorite—Bonne Maman preserves that are presented in adorable mini jars.

A few of the sights the bus drives by include the London Eye, Big Ben, The House of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, The Royal Albert Hall, Hyde Park, St James’s Park and more. The tour gives one a general idea of where everything is located, so it is an excellent outing for one’s second or third day in London.

The air smells of buttercream frosting and echoes with laughter as the other guests on the bus celebrate a sweet occasion with friends. Rather than causing noise, this actually adds to the excitement on the bus.
For dessert, I indulge in a chocolate macaron and sweet pastries. A pretty cupcake is brought to us at the very end, but despite how pretty it is, I am too full to eat a crumb more. The savories and sweets already provided were plentiful.
